Setup and Preparation

Before applying the primer, ensure your work area is adequately ventilated. Gather all necessary materials, including PVC/CPVC pipes and fittings, solvent cement, a suitable applicator (often included with the primer or cement), and personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses).

Required Tools and Materials:

  • BLACK+DECKER P8100 Aqua Plumb Purple Primer
  • Appropriate PVC or CPVC solvent cement
  • Pipe cutter or saw
  • Deburring tool or utility knife
  • Clean rags
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves

Operating Instructions (Application)

Follow these steps for proper application of the purple primer:

  1. Cut and Deburr Pipe: Cut the pipe to the desired length, ensuring a square cut. Remove any burrs or shavings from both the inside and outside edges of the pipe using a deburring tool or utility knife.
  2. Dry Fit: Dry fit the pipe and fitting to ensure proper alignment and a snug fit. The pipe should enter the fitting socket about one-third to two-thirds of the way without primer or cement.
  3. Apply Primer: Open the primer can carefully. Using the applicator dauber, apply a liberal coat of BLACK+DECKER P8100 Purple Primer to the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the fitting socket. Ensure the entire surface to be joined is thoroughly covered with a uniform purple color. The primer will soften and clean the plastic surface.
  4. Apply Solvent Cement: Immediately after priming (while the primer is still wet), apply a generous, even coat of the appropriate solvent cement to the primed pipe end and a thinner coat to the inside of the fitting socket.
  5. Join Pipe and Fitting: Quickly insert the pipe into the fitting socket with a quarter-turn motion until the pipe bottoms out. Hold the joint firmly for at least 30 seconds to prevent the pipe from pushing out of the fitting.
  6. Cure Time: Wipe off any excess cement from the joint. Allow the joint to cure according to the solvent cement manufacturer's recommendations before handling or pressurizing the system. Cure times vary based on pipe size, temperature, and humidity.

Maintenance and Storage

Proper maintenance and storage ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the primer.

  • Container Care: Keep the primer can tightly closed when not in use to prevent evaporation and contamination.
  • Storage: Store the primer in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames. Do not store above 110°F (43°C).
  • Disposal: Dispose of empty containers and unused primer according to local regulations for hazardous waste. Do not pour down drains.
