What's in the Box
Upon opening the package, you should find the following:
- 1 x Yuasa YUAM22162 YB16AL-A2 Battery (Dry)
Note: Battery acid (electrolyte) is NOT included with this dry battery and must be purchased separately. Refer to the "Setup" section for more details.
Setup
The Yuasa YB16AL-A2 is a dry battery and requires activation before use. This process involves filling the battery with electrolyte (battery acid) and then charging it.
Required Materials (Not Included):
- Battery-grade sulfuric acid (electrolyte)
- Battery charger suitable for lead-acid batteries
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety glasses, acid-resistant gloves, and protective clothing.
Activation Steps:
- Prepare the Area: Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, on a level surface. Place the battery on a protective mat or tray to catch any spills.
- Remove Vent Caps: Carefully remove the vent caps from the top of the battery.
- Fill with Electrolyte: Slowly and carefully pour the battery-grade sulfuric acid into each cell until the liquid level reaches the "UPPER LEVEL" mark. Avoid overfilling.
- Allow to Stand: After filling, allow the battery to stand for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours) to allow the electrolyte to soak into the plates and for any air bubbles to escape. Tap the sides of the battery gently to release trapped air.
- Check Level: Recheck the electrolyte level. If it has dropped below the "LOWER LEVEL" mark, add more acid until it reaches the "UPPER LEVEL" mark.
- Initial Charge: Connect the battery to a suitable battery charger. Charge the battery at a low amperage (e.g., 1-2 amps) until it is fully charged. Refer to your charger's instructions for specific charging times and indicators. A typical initial charge can take 5-10 hours.
- Install Vent Caps: Once fully charged, securely replace the vent caps.
- Installation: Install the activated battery into your vehicle according to the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. Ensure terminals are clean and connections are secure.

Operating the Battery
Once activated and installed, the Yuasa YB16AL-A2 battery operates as a standard lead-acid battery for starting and powering your vehicle's electrical system.
- Ensure all connections are tight and free of corrosion.
- Avoid deep discharging the battery, as this can shorten its lifespan.
- If the vehicle is not used for extended periods, consider using a trickle charger or battery maintainer to keep the battery fully charged.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Yuasa battery.
- Check Electrolyte Levels: Periodically check the electrolyte level in each cell. If it falls below the "LOWER LEVEL" mark, add distilled water (NOT acid) to bring it up to the "UPPER LEVEL" mark.
- Clean Terminals: Keep battery terminals clean and free of corrosion. Use a wire brush and a mixture of baking soda and water to clean any corrosion. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease or battery terminal protector.
- Check Connections: Ensure battery cables are securely fastened to the terminals. Loose connections can lead to poor performance and heat buildup.
- Charge Regularly: If the vehicle is stored or used infrequently, charge the battery regularly using a suitable battery charger or maintainer to prevent sulfation and maintain charge.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Battery not holding charge | Undercharging, sulfation, internal short, old battery | Ensure proper charging, check charging system, replace battery if necessary. |
| Slow cranking | Low charge, corroded terminals, loose connections | Charge battery, clean terminals, tighten connections. |
| Battery fluid level low | Evaporation during use/charging | Add distilled water to the "UPPER LEVEL" mark. |
| Battery does not come with acid | This is a dry-shipped battery | Purchase battery-grade sulfuric acid separately and follow activation steps. |
