Greenlee DM-20

Greenlee DM-20 Digital Multimeter User Manual

Model: DM-20 | Brand: Greenlee

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective use of the Greenlee DM-20 Manual Ranging Digital Multimeter. The DM-20 is a versatile tool designed for electrical measurements, including AC/DC voltage, DC current, resistance, and continuity. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device to ensure proper function and safety.

Safety Information

Always adhere to the following safety precautions to prevent personal injury or damage to the multimeter:

  • Do not exceed the maximum input limits for any function. The DM-20 is rated CAT II MAX 300V.
  • Ensure the test leads are in good condition, without cracks or damaged insulation.
  • Never connect the multimeter to a voltage source when the function switch is set to current, resistance, or diode mode.
  • Exercise extreme caution when working with live electrical circuits.
  • Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
  • Do not operate the multimeter if it appears damaged or is not functioning correctly.

Product Overview

The Greenlee DM-20 features a clear digital display, a rotary function switch, and integrated test leads for convenience.

Figure 1: Greenlee DM-20 Digital Multimeter. This image shows the front of the multimeter, featuring the digital display, the yellow rotary dial for function selection, and the integrated red and black test leads. The Greenlee logo and model number DM-20 are visible at the bottom.

Key Components:

  • Digital Display: Shows measurement readings.
  • Rotary Function Switch: Selects the desired measurement function (e.g., V~ for AC Voltage, V--- for DC Voltage, Ω for Resistance, A--- for DC Current).
  • Test Leads: Integrated red (positive) and black (negative) leads for connecting to circuits.
  • Input Jacks: (Implicitly, where the leads connect internally, though they are integrated).

Setup

1. Battery Installation:

The Greenlee DM-20 requires a 9-volt battery for operation. Batteries are not included with the unit. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the rear of the unit.
  3. Remove the screw(s) securing the cover and carefully lift it off.
  4. Connect a new 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity (+ and -).
  5. Place the battery into the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw(s).

2. Test Lead Connection:

The DM-20 features integrated test leads, meaning they are permanently attached to the unit. Ensure the leads are not damaged before use.

Operating Instructions

The DM-20 is a manual ranging multimeter. This means you must select the appropriate range for your measurement. If the range is unknown, start with the highest range and work downwards until a stable reading is obtained.

1. Measuring DC Voltage (V---):

  • Turn the rotary switch to the desired DC Voltage range (e.g., 20V, 200V, 300V).
  • Connect the red test lead to the positive (+) side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative (-) side.
  • Read the voltage value on the display.

2. Measuring AC Voltage (V~):

  • Turn the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage range (e.g., 200V, 300V).
  • Connect the test leads across the AC voltage source.
  • Read the voltage value on the display.

3. Measuring Resistance (Ω):

  • Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  • Turn the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (e.g., 200Ω, 2000Ω, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2000kΩ).
  • Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
  • Read the resistance value on the display.

4. Measuring DC Current (A---):

  • Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the multimeter in series.
  • Turn the rotary switch to the desired DC Current range (e.g., 200µA, 20mA, 200mA).
  • Break the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load. The current must flow through the multimeter.
  • Apply power to the circuit and read the current value on the display.

5. Diode Test ():

  • Turn the rotary switch to the Diode test position.
  • Connect the red lead to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of the diode.
  • The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; an open circuit (OL) reading indicates a good diode.

6. Continuity Test ():

  • Turn the rotary switch to the Continuity test position.
  • Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  • A continuous beep indicates a low resistance path (continuity).

Maintenance

1. Battery Replacement:

Refer to the "Battery Installation" section under Setup for detailed instructions. Replace the battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display to ensure accurate measurements.

2. Cleaning:

Wipe the multimeter casing with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before use.

3. Storage:

If the multimeter is not used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage and damage to the unit. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
