Setup Instructions
- Unpack Components: Carefully remove all chess pieces and the playing mat from the packaging. Verify that all 32 chess pieces (16 light, 16 dark) are present.
- Prepare Playing Area: Choose a flat, clear surface for your game, suitable for a 3-foot square mat. This set can be used indoors or outdoors.
- Lay Out the Mat: Unfold the 3-foot square playing mat and lay it flat on your chosen surface. Smooth out any creases to ensure a level playing field.
- Arrange Chess Pieces: Place the chess pieces on the mat according to standard chess rules. Each player will have 16 pieces: one King, one Queen, two Rooks, two Knights, two Bishops, and eight Pawns.
- The back row for each player consists of Rooks on the corners, followed by Knights, then Bishops. The Queen is placed on her own color (light Queen on a light square, dark Queen on a dark square), and the King occupies the remaining square.
- The second row for each player is filled with eight Pawns.
Operating Instructions (How to Play)
The Pressman Giant Garden Chess Set follows the traditional rules of chess. If you are unfamiliar with the game, numerous resources are available online and in libraries to learn the specific movements of each piece and game strategy.
- Objective: The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent's King, meaning the King is under attack (in "check") and has no legal move to escape.
- Players: This game is designed for two players.
- Age Recommendation: Suitable for players aged 8 and up.
- Game Play: Players take turns moving one piece at a time. The light-colored pieces always move first.
- Piece Movement: Each type of chess piece has a unique way of moving on the board. Familiarize yourself with these movements before playing.
Maintenance
- Cleaning Chess Pieces: The plastic chess pieces can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners that may scratch the surface. Ensure pieces are dry before storage.
- Cleaning the Mat: The fabric playing mat can be gently wiped with a damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, hand wash with mild detergent and air dry. Do not machine wash or tumble dry, as this may damage the mat.
- Storage: Store the chess pieces and mat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent material degradation. The pieces are hollow and can be nested or stored compactly.
- Mat Care: To minimize creases, roll the mat for storage rather than folding it.
Troubleshooting
- Missing Pieces: If any pieces are missing upon unpacking, please contact Pressman customer support for assistance.
- Mat Creases: If the mat has persistent creases, lay it flat in a warm area or gently iron on a low setting with a protective cloth, avoiding direct heat on the printed surface.
- Pieces Tipping Over: The pieces are lightweight for portability. For outdoor use in windy conditions, consider placing small weights (e.g., sandbags, small rocks) at the base of the pieces if they have an opening, or use the set in a sheltered area. Note: Modifying pieces may void warranty.
