2. Components Included

  • 1 x Stanley Hardware S748-848 Full Surface Screen Door Spring Hinge
  • 1 x Adjusting Rod
  • 2 x Stop Pins
  • 6 x Flat Head Wood Screws (7" x 3/4")

3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of your spring hinge:

  1. Determine Hinge Placement: Identify the desired location for the hinge on your screen door and door frame. This hinge is designed for full surface mounting, meaning one leaf mounts to the surface of the door and the other to the surface of the door frame.
  2. Mark Screw Holes: Position the hinge in place and use a pencil to mark the locations for the six screw holes on both the door and the door frame. Ensure the hinge is level and aligned correctly for smooth door operation.
  3. Pre-drill Pilot Holes: Using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter, pre-drill pilot holes at each marked location. This prevents wood splitting and ensures a secure fit.
  4. Attach Hinge to Door: Secure one leaf of the hinge to the screen door using the provided flat head wood screws. Tighten screws firmly but do not overtighten.
  5. Attach Hinge to Door Frame: Align the door with the door frame and secure the other leaf of the hinge to the door frame using the remaining screws. Ensure the door swings freely and closes properly.
  6. Adjust Spring Tension: Proceed to the "Operating Instructions" section to adjust the spring tension to your desired closing force.

Note: This hinge can be used for either right-hand or left-hand applications without modification.

4. Operating Instructions (Adjusting Spring Tension)

The spring tension of your hinge is fully adjustable to control the closing speed and force of your screen door. To adjust the tension:

  1. Locate Adjustment Holes: On the barrel of the hinge, you will find a series of small holes. These are the tension adjustment points.
  2. Insert Adjusting Rod: Insert the provided adjusting rod into one of the adjustment holes.
  3. Rotate to Increase/Decrease Tension: Carefully rotate the adjusting rod in the direction that increases or decreases the spring tension. You will feel resistance as the spring winds or unwinds.
  4. Insert Stop Pin: Once the desired tension is achieved, insert one of the stop pins into the nearest available hole to lock the tension in place. Ensure the stop pin is fully seated to prevent the spring from unwinding.
  5. Test Door Closure: Open and close the screen door several times to test the new tension setting. Adjust further if necessary.

Caution: Do not over-tension the spring, as this can damage the hinge or the door. Always ensure the stop pin is securely in place after adjustment.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your spring hinge:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe down the hinge with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the zinc-plated finish.
  • Lubrication: While the hinge is designed for smooth operation, a light application of a silicone-based lubricant to the pivot points and spring mechanism once a year can help maintain smooth action and prevent squeaking.
  • Check Screws: Annually inspect all mounting screws to ensure they are tight. Loose screws can lead to hinge misalignment or failure. Tighten any loose screws immediately.
  • Inspect for Wear: Check the hinge for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Although rust-resistant, extreme conditions can affect the finish over time.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Door does not close fully or closes too slowly.Insufficient spring tension.Increase spring tension using the adjusting rod and secure with a stop pin (refer to Section 4).
Door slams shut or closes too quickly.Excessive spring tension.Decrease spring tension using the adjusting rod and secure with a stop pin (refer to Section 4).
Hinge makes squeaking noises.Lack of lubrication or dirt accumulation.Clean the hinge and apply a silicone-based lubricant to the pivot points.
Hinge feels loose or door sags.Loose mounting screws.Tighten all mounting screws on both the door and the door frame. If holes are stripped, consider using longer screws or wood filler.
Tension adjustment pin pops out.Stop pin not fully seated or spring over-tensioned.Ensure the stop pin is fully inserted into the adjustment hole. If the spring is over-tensioned, reduce tension slightly before re-inserting the pin.
