1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Brother PT-80 P-touch Electronic Labeling System. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure correct usage and optimal performance.

2. Package Contents

Verify that all items are included in your package:

  • Brother PT-80 P-touch Electronic Labeling System
  • 1/2" (12mm) Black-on-White Non-Laminated Starter Tape Cassette
  • User Manual (this document)

Note: Four AAA batteries are required for operation and are sold separately.

3. Setup

3.1. Installing Batteries

  1. Ensure the device is powered off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the underside of the unit.
  3. Slide the cover in the direction indicated by the arrow to open it.
  4. Insert four new AAA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover, sliding it until it clicks into place.

3.2. Installing the Tape Cassette

  1. Ensure the device is powered off.
  2. Open the tape cassette cover, typically located on the top-left side of the unit.
  3. Insert the tape cassette firmly into the compartment with the tape end facing the tape exit slot. Ensure it is seated correctly.
  4. Close the tape cassette cover until it clicks securely.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Powering On/Off

  • To power on: Press the Power button (red circle with a line).
  • To power off: Press the Power button again. The device will also automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.

4.2. Creating a Label

  1. Power on the device. The 8-character LCD display will show a blinking cursor.
  2. Type your desired text using the QWERTY keyboard. The text will appear on the LCD display.
  3. To print the label, press the Print button (green button with a printer icon).
  4. After printing, use the integrated cutter on the left side of the unit to cut the label.

4.3. Text Formatting Options

The PT-80 offers various formatting options to customize your labels:

  • Type Styles: Select from 9 different type styles. Use the 'Fn' (Function) button in combination with other keys to access style options.
  • Type Sizes: Choose from 6 type sizes, up to 17 pt.
  • Framing and Underlining: Apply 5 different framing options or underline text for emphasis.
  • Symbols: Access 71 built-in symbols to add visual elements to your labels. Press the Symbol button to browse and select.
  • Time & Date: Press the Time/Date button to automatically insert the current time and date onto your label.
  • Two-Line Printing: The device supports printing up to two lines of text on a single label.
  • Repeat Printing: Print multiple copies (1-9) of the same label.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning the Unit

  • Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Do not use alcohol or other organic solvents.
  • Periodically clean the print head using a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure the device is off and batteries are removed before cleaning the print head.

5.2. Replacing Tape Cassettes

When the tape cassette is empty or you wish to change tape types/colors, follow the steps in Section 3.2. 'Installing the Tape Cassette' to replace it with a new one. The PT-80 uses non-laminated M tape in 3/8" (9mm) and 1/2" (12mm) widths.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PT-80, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
