Preparation and Setup

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, wax, rust, and loose paint. For best results, lightly sand glossy surfaces. For metal, ensure all rust is removed.
  2. Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or in a garage with open doors and windows.
  3. Protection: Cover adjacent areas to protect from overspray. Wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection.
  4. Shake Can: Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during use.

Operating Instructions

  1. Test Spray: Before applying to the main surface, test spray on an inconspicuous area or scrap material to check color and spray pattern.
  2. Application Distance: Hold the can upright approximately 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) from the surface.
  3. Apply Light Coats: Apply the primer in thin, even coats using a steady, sweeping motion. Over-application can lead to runs or drips. Multiple light coats are more effective than one heavy coat.
  4. Recoat Time: Allow 5-10 minutes between coats.
  5. Drying Time: The primer is typically dry to touch in 15 minutes and can be handled in 1 hour. For optimal adhesion and to prevent wrinkling of the topcoat, allow the primer to cure for 24 hours before applying a finishing coat.
  6. Sanding: This primer is sandable. If desired, lightly sand between coats or before applying a topcoat after sufficient drying.

Maintenance and Storage

  • Cleaning Nozzle: After each use, invert the can and spray for a few seconds until only clear gas emerges. This clears the nozzle and prevents clogging. If the nozzle clogs, remove and clean with mineral spirits or paint thinner. Do not use a pin or wire to clear the nozzle.
  • Storage: Store the can in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames. Do not store at temperatures above 120°F (49°C).
  • Disposal: Dispose of empty cans and unused product according to local regulations.

Troubleshooting

  • Runs or Sags: This usually occurs from applying too much paint in one coat or holding the can too close to the surface. Apply lighter, more even coats.
  • Poor Adhesion: Ensure the surface was properly cleaned and prepared (free of contaminants, lightly sanded if glossy). Allow adequate drying time before applying subsequent coats.
  • Wrinkling of Topcoat: This can happen if the topcoat is applied before the primer has fully cured. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours before applying a finishing coat.
  • Clogged Nozzle: If the nozzle clogs, remove it and soak in mineral spirits or paint thinner. Replace the nozzle. Ensure to clear the nozzle after each use by inverting the can and spraying until clear gas appears.
