4. Installation Guide

The KC2300 Passage Knob is designed for easy installation, fitting standard door preparations. Follow these general steps for proper installation:

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure your door has a standard 161 door prep, including a 2-1/8" diameter bore for the knob and a 1-1/8" x 2-1/4" mortise for the latch. The backset should be 2 3/4".
  2. Diagram of standard 161 door preparation dimensions

  3. Install the Latch: Insert the cylindrical latch into the mortise on the edge of the door. Secure it with screws. Ensure the latch bolt faces the correct direction for door swing.
  4. Components of the door knob including exterior knob, interior knob, T strike, and cylindrical latch

  5. Assemble the Knobs: Slide the exterior knob assembly through the bore hole, ensuring the spindle engages with the latch mechanism. Then, attach the interior knob assembly, aligning it with the exterior components.
  6. Secure the Knobs: Fasten the knob assemblies together using the provided thru-bolts or screws, ensuring they are tightened securely but not overtightened.

  8. Install the Strike Plate: Mark and mortise the door frame for the T strike plate. Secure the strike plate with screws, ensuring the latch bolt engages smoothly when the door is closed.
  9. Test Operation: Open and close the door several times to ensure the knob turns freely and the latch retracts and extends smoothly without sticking.

5. Operation

The Tell Manufacturing KC2300 is a passage knob, meaning it does not have a locking mechanism. To operate the knob:

  • To Open the Door: Simply turn the knob in either direction to retract the latch bolt, then push or pull the door open.
  • To Close the Door: Push or pull the door shut. The latch bolt will automatically retract as it contacts the strike plate and then extend into the strike plate opening, holding the door closed.

No special actions are required for this non-locking function.

6. Care and Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Tell Manufacturing KC2300 Passage Knob, follow these care and maintenance guidelines:

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean the knob and trim with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the latch bolt and internal mechanism (if accessible without disassembly) to ensure smooth operation and prevent sticking. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dust and debris.
  • Check Fasteners: Occasionally check that all mounting screws are tight. Loose screws can lead to wobbling or misalignment, affecting performance.
  • Inspect for Wear: If you notice any significant wear or damage to the knob or latch, consider contacting customer support for assistance or replacement parts.
