3. Setup

  1. Shuffle the Deck: Thoroughly shuffle all 108 UNO cards.
  2. Deal Cards: Deal 7 cards face down to each player.
  3. Create Draw Pile: Place the remaining cards face down to form the Draw Pile.
  4. Start Discard Pile: Turn the top card of the Draw Pile face up and place it next to the Draw Pile to start the Discard Pile. If an Action Card is drawn, refer to the 'Action Cards' section for specific rules.

4. Operating (How to Play)

The player to the left of the dealer starts the game. Play proceeds clockwise.

Playing a Card

On your turn, you must match the top card of the Discard Pile by either:

  • Matching its color.
  • Matching its number or symbol.
  • Playing a Wild Card.

If you cannot play a card, you must draw one card from the Draw Pile. If the drawn card can be played, you may play it immediately. Otherwise, your turn ends.

Action Cards

  • Skip: The next player in sequence loses their turn.
  • Reverse: Changes the direction of play. If play was clockwise, it becomes counter-clockwise, and vice versa.
  • Draw Two (+2): The next player must draw two cards and lose their turn.
  • Wild: Allows the player to change the color of play. Can be played on any card.
  • Wild Draw Four (+4): The next player must draw four cards and lose their turn. The player who plays this card also chooses the next color. This card can only be played if you do not have a card of the current color in your hand (though you can have a matching number/symbol card).
  • Wild Swap Hands: Allows the player to swap their hand with any other player.
  • Wild Customizable Cards: These blank cards allow players to write their own rules before the game begins, adding a unique twist to each game.

Calling "UNO!"

When you play your second-to-last card, you must immediately shout "UNO!" (meaning "one"). If you fail to do so and another player catches you before the next player takes their turn, you must draw two penalty cards.

Winning a Round

The first player to play their last card wins the round. Points are then tallied based on the cards remaining in opponents' hands.

5. Scoring

Points are awarded to the winner of each round based on the cards left in their opponents' hands:

  • Number cards (0-9): Face value.
  • Draw Two, Reverse, Skip: 20 points each.
  • Wild, Wild Draw Four, Wild Swap Hands, Wild Customizable: 50 points each.

The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.

  • Partner Play: Players across from each other form teams. The game ends when one player on a team goes out, and the team's score is tallied.
  • Tournament Options: For extended play, multiple games can be played, with scores accumulating until a predetermined total is reached.
