4.1 Front Panel Controls and Connectors

  • Input 1 & 2 Gain Knobs: Adjust the input level for connected microphones or instruments.

  • Input 1 & 2 (XLR/TRS Combo Jacks): Connect microphones (XLR) or line-level instruments (TRS).
  • Monitor Outputs (Left/Right): Balanced 1/4-inch TRS outputs for connecting to studio monitors.

5. Setup

5.1 System Requirements

Ensure your computer meets the minimum requirements for Pro Tools LE software and the MBox 2 interface. Refer to the Pro Tools LE documentation for detailed system specifications.

  • Operating System: Compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems (specific versions detailed in Pro Tools LE manual).
  • USB Port: Available USB 2.0 port.
  • Software: Pro Tools LE (included).

5.2 Hardware Connection

  1. Connect to Computer: Use the provided USB cable to connect the MBox 2 to an available USB port on your computer. The MBox 2 is USB-powered, so no external power adapter is typically needed.
  2. Connect Microphones/Instruments:
    • For microphones, connect via the XLR inputs on the rear panel. If using a condenser microphone, activate 48V phantom power using the front panel switch.
    • For line-level instruments (e.g., keyboards, guitar preamps), connect via the TRS inputs on the rear panel.
    • For direct instrument input (e.g., electric guitar/bass), use the DI/Mic switch on the front panel.
  3. Connect Monitors/Headphones:
    • Connect your studio monitors to the Left and Right Monitor Outputs on the rear panel.
    • Plug your headphones into the Headphone Output on the front panel.
  4. Connect MIDI Devices (Optional): Use MIDI cables to connect your MIDI controller or other MIDI devices to the MIDI In/Out ports on the rear panel.

5.3 Software Installation

  1. Insert the Pro Tools LE Software CD into your computer's optical drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Pro Tools LE and the necessary drivers for the MBox 2.
  3. Restart your computer if prompted.
  4. Launch Pro Tools LE and configure the MBox 2 as your audio playback and recording device in the software's preferences.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Recording Audio

  1. Connect your microphone or instrument to the MBox 2 inputs.
  2. Adjust the Input Gain knob for the corresponding channel. Monitor the Peak LED to ensure the signal does not clip (turn red).
  3. In Pro Tools LE, create a new audio track and select the appropriate MBox 2 input.
  4. Arm the track for recording and begin recording your audio.
  5. Use the Mix knob on the MBox 2 to adjust the balance between your live input and the computer's playback for comfortable monitoring.

6.2 MIDI Operation

  1. Connect your MIDI controller to the MBox 2 MIDI In port.
  2. In Pro Tools LE, create a new MIDI track and select the MBox 2 MIDI input.
  3. You can now record MIDI data from your controller into Pro Tools LE.

7. Maintenance

  • Keep the MBox 2 clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Regularly check cable connections for wear and tear.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Power/No Lights: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the MBox 2 and a functioning USB port on your computer. Try a different USB port or cable.
  • No Audio Input:
    • Check all cable connections.
    • Verify input gain knobs are turned up.
    • Ensure 48V phantom power is engaged for condenser microphones.
    • Confirm the correct input is selected in Pro Tools LE.
  • No Audio Output:
    • Check monitor and headphone volume knobs.
    • Verify monitor cables are correctly connected.
    • Ensure MBox 2 is selected as the playback device in your computer's sound settings and Pro Tools LE.
  • Software Not Recognizing MBox 2: Reinstall the MBox 2 drivers and Pro Tools LE software. Ensure your operating system is compatible.
