3. Choosing the Correct Adjust-A-Gate Model

It is crucial to select the correct gate kit based on your desired gate opening width and height. This manual pertains to the AG 36-3 model, suitable for 36-60 inch wide openings and heights up to 7 feet. Refer to the diagram below to understand the various models available and ensure you have the appropriate kit for your project.

4. Setup and Installation

The Adjust-A-Gate kit is designed for straightforward on-site assembly. Follow these general steps for installation. Always refer to the detailed instructions provided in your kit packaging for specific measurements and safety guidelines.

4.1 Site Preparation

  1. Measure Opening: Accurately measure the width of your gate opening between the posts. Ensure your posts are securely installed and plumb.
  2. Clearance: Maintain approximately 1 inch of clearance between the gate and the posts, and between double gates, to allow for proper swing and potential minor settling.

4.2 Frame Assembly

  1. Lay Out Components: Lay all frame components on a flat, level surface.
  2. Attach Hinges: Secure the gate hinges to one of the vertical frame uprights. The hinges are typically installed on the inside of your gate posts.
  3. Install Spreader Bars: Insert the adjustable spreader bars into the vertical frame uprights. These bars will be extended to match your gate opening width. No cutting of the metal frame is required.
  4. Attach Second Upright: Connect the second vertical frame upright to the spreader bars.
  5. Secure Frame: Ensure the frame is square and tighten all connections.

4.3 Gate Infill and Mounting

  1. Attach Infill Material: Secure your chosen infill material (e.g., wood pickets) to the assembled steel frame. Ensure even spacing and alignment.
  2. Install Post Hinge Pins: Drill pilot holes and install the post hinge pins into your fence posts. A 1/2-inch spade bit may be required for proper depth, especially for 4x4 posts. Apply a liberal amount of grease to the pins before mounting the gate.
  3. Mount Gate: Carefully lift and place the gate onto the installed hinge pins.
  4. Install Latch: Attach the 2-way gate latch and catch to the gate frame and the adjacent post, ensuring smooth operation.

4.4 Anti-Sag Truss Cable System

The patented truss cable system is critical for preventing gate sag. Install the cable as per the kit's instructions, typically running diagonally from the top hinge side to the bottom latch side. Tighten the turnbuckle until the gate is level and aligned. Adjustments may be needed over time.

5. Operating the Gate

Once installed, the Adjust-A-Gate operates like any standard gate. The included 2-way latch allows for opening and closing from either side. Ensure the latch engages fully when closing the gate to secure it.

  • To open, disengage the latch mechanism.
  • Swing the gate open smoothly. Avoid forcing the gate if it encounters resistance.
  • To close, swing the gate back into position and ensure the latch securely engages.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your Adjust-A-Gate.

  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a silicone-based lubricant to the hinge pins and latch mechanism to ensure smooth movement and prevent squeaking.
  • Truss Cable Adjustment: Over time, minor settling or changes in temperature may affect the gate's alignment. Inspect the gate for any signs of sagging. If sagging occurs, adjust the turnbuckle on the truss cable to re-level the gate. Do not overtighten.
  • Hardware Check: Annually inspect all screws and bolts for tightness. Tighten any loose fasteners to prevent instability.
  • Cleaning: Clean the steel frame with mild soap and water as needed to remove dirt and debris. The powder-coated finish provides rust resistance, but regular cleaning helps maintain its integrity.
  • Rust Inspection: Although the frame is rust-resistant, inspect for any signs of rust, especially in areas where the coating might be scratched or damaged. Touch up with appropriate rust-inhibiting paint if necessary.

7. Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:

  • Gate Sags or Drags:
    • Check the tension of the truss cable. Tighten the turnbuckle gradually until the gate is level.
    • Ensure all frame connections and infill materials are securely fastened.
    • Verify that the gate posts are plumb and stable. Unstable posts can contribute to sagging.
  • Gate is Difficult to Open/Close:
    • Lubricate the hinge pins and latch mechanism.
    • Check for obstructions in the gate's swing path.
    • Inspect the latch for proper alignment with the catch. Adjust if necessary.
  • Screws Stripping During Installation:
    • Always drill appropriate pilot holes before inserting screws, especially into wood.
    • Use a drill with adjustable torque settings to prevent overtightening.
    • Consider using higher-quality screws (e.g., Robertson head) if the provided hardware proves problematic, as noted by some users.
