3. Setup
3.1 Adjusting Interpupillary Distance
The interpupillary distance (the distance between the centers of your pupils) must be correctly set to ensure a single, circular field of view. Hold the binoculars up to your eyes and adjust the hinge until you see a single, clear image without any dark edges.
Figure 2: Adjusting the binocular hinge for interpupillary distance.
3.2 Adjusting Eyecups
The eyecups can be adjusted to accommodate users with or without eyeglasses. Rotate the eyecups counter-clockwise to extend them for use without eyeglasses. If you wear eyeglasses, rotate the eyecups clockwise until they are fully retracted.

3.3 Attaching the Neck Strap
Thread the provided neck strap through the strap lugs on each side of the binocular body. Ensure the strap is securely fastened before use to prevent accidental drops.
4. Operating the Binoculars
4.1 Focusing
The Leica Ultravid BR 8x20 features a central focusing wheel and a diopter adjustment. To focus:
- Close your right eye and look through the left eyepiece at a distant object. Rotate the central focusing wheel until the image is sharp.
- Close your left eye and look through the right eyepiece. Adjust the diopter ring (located on the right eyepiece) until the image is sharp.
- With both eyes open, the image should now be perfectly focused. For subsequent use, only the central focusing wheel will typically need adjustment for different distances.

4.2 Folding Mechanism
The compact design allows the binoculars to be folded for easy storage and transport. Gently push the two barrels together until they are fully collapsed. To use, pull them apart until they are at your desired interpupillary distance.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning the Lenses
To clean the lenses, first use a soft brush or compressed air to remove any loose dust or debris. Then, use the provided lens cleaning cloth or a specialized optical cleaning cloth with a small amount of lens cleaning fluid. Wipe gently in a circular motion. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the lens coatings.
5.2 Cleaning the Body
The rubber-armored body can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. For stubborn dirt, a mild soap solution can be used, followed by wiping with a clean, damp cloth. Ensure no water enters the optical system.
5.3 Storage
Store your binoculars in a cool, dry place, preferably in their protective carrying case, when not in use. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Blurred image | Incorrect focus or diopter setting | Adjust the central focusing wheel and diopter ring as described in Section 4.1. |
| Double image or dark edges | Incorrect interpupillary distance | Adjust the hinge until a single, circular field of view is achieved (Section 3.1). |
| Image appears dim | Low light conditions or dirty lenses | Ensure lenses are clean (Section 5.1). Binoculars perform best in adequate light. |
| Eyecups do not extend/retract smoothly | Dirt or debris in the mechanism | Gently clean around the eyecup mechanism. Do not force. If issue persists, contact support. |
