Droll Yankees YCPD90 Dipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder
Instruction Manual
Product Overview
The Droll Yankees YCPD90 Dipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder is designed to attract small birds while deterring squirrels and larger nuisance birds. It features a unique weight-sensitive perch mechanism that collapses under the weight of heavier animals, preventing them from accessing the birdseed. The feeder is constructed from durable, UV-stabilized polycarbonate and die-cast metal components, ensuring longevity in outdoor environments.
This feeder holds up to 5 pounds of birdseed, with inner baffling for consistent seed distribution and four feeding ports for easy access by birds. Its design focuses on providing a safe and accessible feeding station for desired bird species.

Setup and Installation
- Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging. Ensure the feeder tube, cap, base, and hanging wire are present.
- Choose Location: Select a suitable location for hanging the feeder. For best results, hang the bird feeder near trees and bushes rather than in the open. Ensure it is mounted securely to prevent theft or damage by larger animals.
- Fill with Seed:
- Remove the top cap of the feeder.
- Pour up to 5 pounds of your preferred birdseed into the polycarbonate tube. The inner baffling will ensure steady seed distribution.
- Replace the cap securely.
- Hang Feeder: Use the integrated stainless-steel wire and bail-loop to hang the feeder from a sturdy hook or branch. The bail-loop is designed to limit mobility once hung.

Operating Instructions
The Dipper feeder operates on a weight-sensitive mechanism. When a bird lands on one of the perches, its light weight allows the perch to remain stable, providing access to the feeding port. However, if a squirrel or a large, heavy bird (such as a crow or starling) attempts to land on the perch, their increased weight will cause the perch to collapse downwards, effectively closing off access to the seed ports. This action discourages unwanted visitors while ensuring smaller birds can feed undisturbed.

Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning of your bird feeder is crucial to protect birds from bacteria and disease. Wet or moldy food can host harmful germs and should be discarded immediately.
- Empty Feeder: Remove any remaining birdseed from the feeder.
- Disassemble (if necessary): The feeder is designed for easy disassembly for thorough cleaning.
- Clean Thoroughly: Wash the feeder components with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar. Do not use harsh chemicals or detergents, as these can be harmful to birds.
- Rinse and Dry: Rinse all parts thoroughly with clean water to remove any vinegar residue. Allow all components to air dry completely before reassembling and refilling with fresh seed.
Troubleshooting
- Squirrels Still Accessing Seed:
- Ensure the feeder is hung at least 18 inches away from any surface (walls, branches, poles) that squirrels can use to bypass the perches.
- Check if the perches are free of debris and can move freely.
- Verify that the feeder is not overfilled, which might allow squirrels to reach seed without activating the mechanism.
- Perches Not Activating:
- Inspect perches for any damage or obstruction that might prevent them from collapsing.
- Ensure the feeder is clean and there is no sticky residue or debris hindering the mechanism.
- Seed Not Dispensing:
- Check for clogs in the feeding ports, especially with larger seed mixes or if seed has become wet and clumped.
- Ensure the inner baffling is correctly positioned.
