Tech 21 GT2 SansAmp GT2 Amplifier Emulation Pedal

User Manual

Brand: tech21 | Model: SansAmp GT2

Introduction

The Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 is an amplifier emulation pedal designed to allow users to create custom amplifier rigs. It enables the mixing and matching of individual amplifier components, including amplifier type, modification, and speaker cabinet/microphone placement configurations. This pedal is 100% analog and suitable for both stage and studio applications.

Key Features:

  • 100% analog signal path for authentic tone.
  • Versatile for both live performance and recording studio environments.

Setup

Before operating the SansAmp GT2, ensure proper power and connections are established.

Power Supply:

The SansAmp GT2 can be powered by a single 9V alkaline battery or an optional external 9V DC regulated power supply (Tech 21 Model #DC2 or equivalent). When using a battery, the unit automatically turns on when a cable is plugged into the input jack and turns off when unplugged. For external power, connect the power supply to the "D.C." jack.

Connections:

  1. Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the "IN" jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  2. Connect the "OUT" jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier's input, a mixer, or an audio interface using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.

Operating the SansAmp GT2

The SansAmp GT2 features a range of controls and switches to sculpt your desired amplifier tone. Experimentation is encouraged to discover the full sonic capabilities.

Controls:

  • LEVEL: Adjusts the overall output volume of the pedal.
  • HIGH: Controls the high-frequency equalization (treble).
  • LOW: Controls the low-frequency equalization (bass).
  • DRIVE: Adjusts the amount of gain and overdrive, simulating the power amp section of a tube amplifier.

Switches:

  • MIC (Microphone Placement):
    • OFF AXIS: Simulates a microphone placed off-axis to the speaker cone, resulting in a smoother, warmer sound with less high-end.
    • CENTER: Emulates a microphone placed directly at the center of the speaker cone, providing a brighter, more direct sound.
    • CLASSIC: Offers a balanced, traditional microphone placement sound.
  • MOD (Amplifier Modification):
    • HOT WIRED: Provides a high-gain, modified amplifier sound with increased saturation.
    • HI GAIN: Delivers a boosted gain structure for more aggressive tones.
    • CLEAN: Offers a clean, un-modified amplifier sound.
  • AMP (Amplifier Type):
    • CALIFORNIA: Emulates the sound characteristics of classic Mesa/Boogie® style amplifiers.
    • BRITISH: Simulates the tone of vintage Marshall® style amplifiers.
    • TWEED: Replicates the sound of early Fender® style amplifiers.

Maintenance

Cleaning:

Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and internal components.

Battery Replacement:

To replace the 9V battery, unscrew the four screws on the bottom plate of the pedal. Carefully remove the plate and replace the old battery with a new 9V alkaline battery, observing polarity. Securely reattach the bottom plate.

Storage:

When not in use for extended periods, disconnect all cables and remove the battery to prevent leakage. Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound:
    • Ensure all cables are securely connected to the input and output jacks.
    • Verify the power supply is connected and functioning, or that the 9V battery is fresh and correctly installed.
    • Check the LEVEL knob; ensure it is not set to minimum.
    • Test with different cables and a different amplifier/instrument to isolate the issue.
  • Poor Sound Quality / Excessive Noise:
    • Check for faulty cables.
    • Ensure the power supply is regulated and free from noise.
    • Adjust the HIGH and LOW EQ knobs to reduce harshness or muddiness.
    • Lower the DRIVE setting if the sound is overly distorted or noisy.
  • LED Indicator Not Lighting Up:
    • If using battery power, ensure a cable is plugged into the input jack to activate the unit.
    • Replace the 9V battery if it is depleted.
