Setup

1. Unboxing and Inspection

  • Carefully remove the bass from its packaging.
  • Inspect the instrument for any signs of damage during shipping.
  • Verify all included components are present (e.g., case, if applicable).

2. Battery Installation (for Active Pickups)

The Stiletto Custom-4 features active EMG 35HZ pickups, which require a 9-volt battery for operation. Without a battery, the pickups will not function.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the bass body (refer to Figure 3).
  2. Carefully unscrew the cover of the battery compartment.
  3. Insert a fresh 9-volt battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screws.

3. Initial Tuning

Tune your bass to standard tuning (E, A, D, G from thickest to thinnest string) using an electronic tuner. Minor adjustments to tuning may be required as the strings settle.

4. Strap Attachment

Attach your bass strap securely to the strap buttons located on the body of the instrument.

Operating the Instrument

1. Connecting to an Amplifier

Connect a standard 1/4" instrument cable from the output jack on your bass to the input of your bass amplifier.

2. Control Knobs

The Stiletto Custom-4 features several control knobs to shape your sound:

  • Volume Knob: Controls the overall output level of the bass.
  • Blend Knob: Mixes the output between the neck and bridge pickups. Turn towards the neck for more warmth, towards the bridge for more treble and attack.
  • Tone Knobs (Bass/Treble): These active EQ controls allow you to boost or cut specific frequency ranges.
    • Turning the Bass knob clockwise boosts low frequencies, counter-clockwise cuts them.
    • Turning the Treble knob clockwise boosts high frequencies, counter-clockwise cuts them.

3. Playing Techniques

Experiment with different playing techniques such as fingerstyle, picking, and slapping to explore the full sonic capabilities of your Stiletto Custom-4. The full-scale neck provides a wide range of notes.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

  • After each use, wipe down the strings and body with a clean, soft cloth to remove sweat and oils.
  • For the body finish, use a guitar-specific polish or cleaner sparingly. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Clean the fretboard periodically with a suitable fretboard conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.

2. String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly to maintain optimal tone and playability. Replace one string at a time to maintain neck tension.

3. Setup and Adjustment

Periodically check the instrument's setup, including neck relief (truss rod adjustment), string action (bridge height), and intonation. These adjustments are crucial for optimal playability and can be performed by a qualified guitar technician if you are unfamiliar with the process.

4. Storage

Store your bass in a stable environment, away from extreme temperature changes and humidity fluctuations. A hard case or gig bag is recommended for protection.
