Before First Use:

4. Maintenance and Care

Proper care is essential to maintain the performance and longevity of your cast iron Dutch oven.

Cleaning:

  1. After cooking, clean your Dutch oven with warm water and a stiff brush or scraper. Avoid harsh soaps, as they can strip the seasoning.
  2. For stubborn food residue, simmer water in the Dutch oven for a few minutes, then scrape with a non-metal utensil.
  3. Dry immediately and thoroughly after washing to prevent rust. You can place it on low heat on the stovetop for a few minutes to ensure complete dryness.

Re-Seasoning:

If your Dutch oven loses its non-stick properties or shows signs of rust, it may need re-seasoning.

  1. Clean the Dutch oven thoroughly, removing any rust with steel wool if necessary.
  2. Apply a very thin, even coat of cooking oil (such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or flaxseed oil) to all surfaces of the Dutch oven.
  3. Place the Dutch oven upside down on the middle rack of your oven. Place aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any drips.
  4. Bake at 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit (175-200 degrees Celsius) for one hour.
  5. Turn off the oven and let the Dutch oven cool completely inside the oven.

5. Troubleshooting

Rust Formation:

If rust appears on your cast iron, do not panic. It is a common occurrence and can be easily remedied.

  • Cause: Rust typically forms when cast iron is exposed to moisture for extended periods without proper drying and seasoning.
  • Solution: Scour the affected area with steel wool or a stiff brush to remove all rust. Rinse, dry thoroughly, and then re-season the Dutch oven as described in the Maintenance section.
