Shure WH20 Dynamic Headset Microphone User Manual

Model: WH20XLR

Brand: Shure

Introduction

The Shure WH20 is a rugged, lightweight, dynamic headset microphone designed for high-quality voice pickup. It offers a secure and comfortable fit, making it ideal for active users such as aerobics instructors and musicians. Its low visibility design is suitable for stage appearances.

This microphone features a cardioid (unidirectional) pickup pattern, which enhances gain-before-feedback and provides excellent isolation from ambient noise and other unwanted sound sources. The carefully shaped frequency response includes a voice-frequency presence peak and a low-frequency roll-off to compensate for the proximity effect, ensuring clear audio during close-talk operation.

Setup

Attaching the Windscreen

Gently slide the supplied foam windscreen over the microphone capsule. This helps reduce plosive sounds and wind noise.

Wearing the Headset

Adjust the lightweight wireframe and elastic headband for a secure and comfortable fit on your head. The headset is designed to remain stable during active use.

Positioning the Microphone Boom

Position the collapsible microphone boom so that the microphone capsule is near the corner of your mouth, approximately 1-2 inches away. This optimal placement ensures clear voice pickup.

Connecting the Microphone (WH20XLR Model)

The WH20XLR model features a male 3-pin XLR connector. Connect this connector to a compatible XLR input on your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier.

Utilize the detachable belt clip to secure the microphone cable, preventing accidental disconnections or strain on the connector.

Operating

Power Requirements

The Shure WH20 is a dynamic microphone and does not require phantom power or batteries for operation. It draws power directly from the connected audio device.

Gain Staging

Adjust the input gain on your mixer or audio device to achieve an optimal signal level without clipping or distortion. Start with the gain low and gradually increase it while speaking into the microphone.

Frequency Response Characteristics

The microphone's smooth, natural frequency response is comparable to high-quality dynamic handheld vocal microphones. It includes a voice-frequency presence peak for vocal clarity and a low-frequency roll-off to manage proximity effect.

Proximity Effect

The WH20 is designed to compensate for the proximity effect, which is an increase in bass response when a sound source is close to the microphone. While the microphone's design minimizes this, be aware that very close placement can still result in a slightly warmer sound.

Handling Noise

The extra-strong, small-diameter attached microphone cable resists breakage and minimizes handling noise. Ensure the cable is routed securely to prevent unwanted sounds from being picked up.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Regularly clean the foam windscreen with a mild soap and water solution, then allow it to air dry completely before reattaching.

Wipe down the headset frame and cable with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

Storage

When not in use, store the microphone in a clean, dry place, ideally in its original packaging or a protective case, to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage. The collapsible boom arm allows for easy storage and transportation.

Cable Care

Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the microphone cable. Coil the cable loosely when storing to prevent internal wire damage.

Troubleshooting

No Sound Output

  • Check Connections:

Ensure the XLR connector is fully seated in the input of your mixer or audio device.
  • Input Gain:

Verify that the input gain on your mixer is turned up sufficiently.
  • Mute/Volume:

Confirm that the input channel on your mixer is not muted and its volume fader is up.
  • Cable Integrity:

Inspect the microphone cable for any visible damage. Try a different XLR cable if available.

Distorted Sound

  • Input Overload:

Reduce the input gain on your mixer. The WH20 has a high input clipping level, but excessive gain can still cause distortion.
  • Microphone Placement:

Ensure the microphone is not too close to the sound source, which can cause overload.
  • System Issues:

Check other components in your audio chain (mixer, amplifier, speakers) for distortion.

Excessive Background Noise/Feedback

  • Microphone Placement:

Ensure the microphone is positioned correctly, utilizing its cardioid pattern to reject off-axis sounds. Point the rear of the microphone towards noise sources or speakers.
  • Gain-Before-Feedback:

Reduce overall system gain or adjust monitor speaker placement.
  • Room Acoustics:

In highly reflective rooms, consider acoustic treatment if possible.

Uncomfortable Fit

  • Headband Adjustment:

Re-adjust the elastic headband and wireframe for a more comfortable and secure fit. Experiment with slight repositioning.
