Operating the Lens
Focusing
This is a manual focus lens. To focus, rotate the focus ring until your subject appears sharp in the camera's viewfinder or on the LCD screen. The lens features a rangefinder coupling for precise focusing on compatible cameras. The focus distance scale is marked in both feet (red) and meters (white).
- Minimum Focus Distance: 0.5 meters (19.68 inches).
- Infinity Focus: Indicated by the infinity symbol (∞).
Adjusting Aperture
The lens features a manual aperture ring. Rotate the aperture ring to select your desired f-stop. The aperture range is from f/4 (wide open) to f/22 (minimum aperture). Each click stop represents a full stop increment.
- f/4: Maximum aperture, allows more light, shallower depth of field.
- f/22: Minimum aperture, allows less light, greater depth of field.
Using the Built-in Lens Hood
The lens is equipped with a small, built-in lens hood. This hood helps to reduce flare and ghosting caused by stray light entering the lens. It can be extended or retracted as needed.
Maintenance and Care
Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your lens.
- Cleaning the Lens Elements: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens. Avoid touching the glass surfaces with your fingers.
- Cleaning the Lens Body: Wipe the lens body with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents.
- Storage: When not in use, always attach both front and rear lens caps. Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold growth.
- Avoid Impact: Protect the lens from drops and impacts, which can damage the optical elements or mechanical components.
- Moisture: Keep the lens away from water and high humidity. If the lens gets wet, wipe it dry immediately.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lens not attaching securely to camera. | Incorrect alignment; debris on mount; mount lock not engaging. | Ensure red dots are aligned. Check for and remove any debris from lens and camera mounts. Rotate until a click is heard. |
| Images appear blurry or out of focus. | Incorrect manual focus; dirty lens elements; camera shake. | Carefully adjust focus. Clean lens elements. Use a faster shutter speed or tripod. |
| Vignetting or color shift (especially on digital full-frame). | Inherent characteristic of wide-angle lens design; sensor limitations. | This can be common with certain wide-angle lenses on digital sensors. Post-processing software (e.g., Adobe Lightroom with lens profiles or plugins like Cornerfix) can often correct these issues. |
| Aperture ring is stiff or difficult to turn. | Dust or debris; lack of lubrication. | Gently try to work it. If persistent, do not force it. Contact a qualified lens repair technician. |
