Components
The Tri-Ominos Travel Edition includes the following:
- 56 Plastic Playing Pieces: These are triangular tiles, each with three numbers at its corners. Numbers range from 0 to 5.
- Complete Instructions: This manual provides all necessary rules and guidelines for gameplay.
Setup
- Prepare the Tiles: Place all 56 triangular playing pieces face down on a flat surface and mix them thoroughly. This forms the draw pile.
- Draw Initial Tiles: Each player draws a specific number of tiles from the draw pile. For 2-4 players, each player draws 7 tiles. Players should keep their tiles concealed from opponents.
- Determine First Player: The player with the highest value triple tile (e.g., 5-5-5) starts the game. If no player has a triple, the player with the highest value double tile (e.g., 5-5-X) starts. If still no starting tile, the player with the highest sum of numbers on any single tile begins. The starting tile is placed in the center of the playing area.
Operating (Gameplay)
Tri-Ominos is played in turns, with players adding tiles to the playing area by matching numbers.
Objective
The primary objective is to be the first player to reach a predetermined score, typically 400 points, or to have the highest score when the game ends due to no more possible moves.
Playing a Turn
- On your turn, you must place one of your tiles onto the playing area.
- To place a tile, two numbers on one side of your tile must exactly match two adjacent numbers on a side of an already played tile. The sides must align perfectly.
- If you successfully place a tile, you score points for that tile and any bonuses (see Scoring section).
- Drawing Tiles: If you cannot make a valid move with any of your current tiles, you must draw one tile at a time from the face-down draw pile. You continue drawing until you can make a move or the draw pile is exhausted.
- Passing a Turn: If the draw pile is exhausted and you still cannot make a move, you must pass your turn. You score zero points for that turn.
End of a Round
A round ends when one player successfully plays their last tile. This player receives a bonus for going out, plus additional points based on the tiles remaining in opponents' hands.
End of the Game
The game concludes when a player reaches the agreed-upon target score (e.g., 400 points) at the end of a round, or when no more moves can be made by any player and the draw pile is empty. The player with the highest score wins.
Scoring
Points are awarded for each tile played and for specific formations:
- Tile Value: When you play a tile, you score points equal to the sum of the numbers on its three corners.
- Triple Bonus: If you play a triple tile (e.g., 0-0-0, 1-1-1, etc.), you score an additional 40 points on top of the tile's value.
- Bridge Bonus: If your played tile completes a 'bridge' (a straight line of three tiles), you score an additional 30 points.
- Hexagon Bonus: If your played tile completes a 'hexagon' (six tiles meeting at a central point), you score an additional 40 points.
- Going Out Bonus: When a player plays their last tile, they receive a 25-point bonus. Additionally, they receive 25 points for each tile remaining in opponents' hands.
- Opponent Penalties: At the end of a round, opponents subtract the sum of the numbers on their remaining tiles from their score.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your Tri-Ominos Travel Edition game:
- Store tiles in their original packaging or a suitable container to prevent loss or damage.
- Keep tiles clean and dry. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth if necessary, and dry thoroughly before storing.
- Avoid exposing tiles to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as this may cause warping or fading of the numbers.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and their resolutions:
- Missing Tiles: Ensure all 56 tiles are accounted for before and after gameplay. If a tile is lost, contact Pressman customer support for potential replacement options.
- Fading Numbers: Over time, numbers on tiles may show wear. This is typical with frequent use. Consider using a fine-tip permanent marker to carefully re-trace faded numbers if desired, ensuring not to alter the original design.
- Difficulty Matching Tiles: Double-check that the two numbers on the side of your tile precisely match the two adjacent numbers on the side of the tile you are connecting to. Ensure the orientation is correct.
