Important Safety Instructions

Observe the following safety precautions to prevent electric shock, fire, or damage to the unit:

  • Power Source: Connect the unit only to an AC power outlet of the specified voltage.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not block ventilation openings.

Setup

1. Placement

Place the TEAC R-565 on a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive dust or vibrations. Ensure there is adequate space around the unit for proper ventilation.

2. Power Connection

Connect the AC power cord to the unit's power input and then to a suitable wall outlet. Ensure the power supply matches the voltage requirements of the unit.

3. Audio Connections

Use RCA audio cables to connect the R-565 to your amplifier or receiver.

  • Output: Connect the R-565's LINE OUT (RCA L/R) jacks to an available LINE IN or TAPE IN on your amplifier/receiver.
  • Input: Connect the R-565's LINE IN (RCA L/R) jacks to the LINE OUT or TAPE OUT of your amplifier/receiver for recording purposes.

Operating Instructions

Basic Playback

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the unit.
  2. Press the Eject button to open the cassette compartment.
  3. Insert a cassette tape with the open edge facing forward and close the compartment.
  4. Press the Play button (►) to start playback.
  5. Use the Fast Forward (►►) or Rewind (◄◄) buttons to navigate the tape.
  6. Press the Stop button (■) to stop playback.
  7. Press the Pause button (▮▮) to temporarily stop playback and press it again to resume.

Recording

  1. Insert a recordable cassette tape.
  2. Select the desired input source on your amplifier/receiver.
  3. Press the Record button (●). The Play button will also engage automatically.
  4. Adjust the Record Level knob to ensure the recording level meters on the FL display do not consistently peak into the red zone.
  5. Start playback from your source component.
  6. Press Stop (■) to end recording.

Reverse Mode

The R-565 features a high-precision reverse mechanism for continuous playback in both directions. Use the Reverse Mode selector to choose:

  • One-Way: Plays only one side of the tape.
  • Reverse: Plays both sides of the tape once, then stops.
  • Repeat Playback: Plays both sides of the tape continuously for up to 5 cycles.

Noise Reduction (Dolby NR)

The unit is equipped with Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction systems to reduce tape hiss during playback and recording. Use the Dolby NR switch to select:

  • OFF: No noise reduction applied.
  • DOLBY B: Standard noise reduction for most tapes.
  • DOLBY C: Enhanced noise reduction for higher fidelity.

The unit also features Dolby HX-PRO, which automatically improves high-frequency characteristics during recording.

Special Functions

  • Intro Check: This function automatically finds the beginning of recorded songs and plays them sequentially for a few seconds, allowing you to preview tracks.
  • C.P.S. (Computer Program Search): During tape playback, press the Fast Forward (►►) or Rewind (◄◄) buttons to skip songs. The unit can skip up to 20 tracks forward or backward.
  • Auto Rec Mute: Creates an approximately 4-second silent interval on the tape, useful for separating tracks during recording.
  • Auto Tape Selector: Automatically detects the type of tape (Normal, CrO2, Metal) and adjusts equalization accordingly.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your cassette deck.

Cleaning the Heads and Capstans

Over time, tape heads and capstans can accumulate oxide deposits, affecting sound quality. Clean them regularly (every 10-20 hours of use) using a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol or a specialized head cleaning fluid.

  1. Turn off the unit and unplug it from the power outlet.
  2. Open the cassette compartment.
  3. Gently wipe the tape heads, capstans, and pinch rollers with the dampened cotton swab.
  4. Allow the components to dry completely before closing the compartment or operating the unit.

General Care

  • Keep the unit free from dust by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the unit.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
