2. Safety Precautions

  • Do not look at the sun through the lens: Doing so can cause permanent vision impairment.
  • Keep out of reach of children: This product contains small parts that could be a choking hazard.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Do not leave the lens in direct sunlight or in extremely hot or cold environments.
  • Handle with care: This is a precision optical instrument. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Water and moisture: This lens is weather-resistant, but avoid direct exposure to heavy rain or submersion in water.

4. Part Names and Functions

Familiarize yourself with the various parts of your lens:

  • Focus Ring: Used for manual focusing.
  • Focus Preset Ring: Allows for quick return to a pre-set focus distance.
  • Focus Mode Switch (AF/MF): Selects between autofocus and manual focus.
  • Focus Limiter Switch: Restricts the autofocus range to improve speed. Options typically include FULL (4.5m - ∞) and 1.5m - ∞.
  • Image Stabilizer Switch (ON/OFF): Activates or deactivates the optical image stabilization.
  • Image Stabilizer Mode Switch (MODE 1/2/3): Selects the IS mode suitable for different shooting conditions (e.g., static subjects, panning).
  • Tripod Collar: Allows the lens to be rotated for vertical or horizontal shooting while mounted on a tripod.
  • Lens Mount Index: Aligns with the camera's mount index for proper attachment.
  • Drop-in Filter Slot: For inserting 52mm drop-in filters.

Note: A detailed diagram showing these parts would typically be included here.

5. Setup

5.1 Attaching the Lens

  1. Remove the rear lens cap and the camera body cap.
  2. Align the red index mark on the lens with the red index mark on your Canon EOS camera body.
  3. Turn the lens clockwise until it clicks into place.
  4. To detach, press the lens release button on the camera and turn the lens counter-clockwise.

5.2 Attaching to a Tripod or Monopod

Due to its weight (approximately 8.5 pounds), this lens should be supported by a sturdy tripod or monopod for optimal stability and image sharpness.

  • Attach the lens's tripod collar foot directly to your tripod or monopod head.
  • Ensure the tripod head is rated to support the combined weight of the lens and camera.
  • The tripod collar allows you to rotate the camera and lens assembly for easy switching between horizontal and vertical orientations without removing it from the support.

6. Operating the Lens

6.1 Focusing

  • Autofocus (AF): Set the Focus Mode Switch to "AF". The Ring-type USM provides fast and quiet autofocus.
  • Manual Focus (MF): Set the Focus Mode Switch to "MF". Rotate the focus ring to adjust focus. Full-time manual focus is available even in AF mode by rotating the focus ring after autofocus has been achieved.
  • Focus Limiter: Use the Focus Limiter switch to restrict the autofocus range. This can significantly speed up autofocus when you know your subject will be within a certain distance.

6.2 Image Stabilization (IS)

The built-in Image Stabilizer helps reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially when shooting handheld or at slower shutter speeds.

  • IS ON/OFF Switch: Turn IS "ON" for most shooting situations. Turn "OFF" when using a very sturdy tripod and fast shutter speeds to conserve battery power.
  • IS Mode Switch:
    • MODE 1: Corrects vibrations in all directions. Suitable for stationary subjects.
    • MODE 2: Corrects vertical vibrations during horizontal panning, and horizontal vibrations during vertical panning. Ideal for tracking moving subjects.
    • MODE 3: Stabilizes only during exposure. Useful for erratic movement or when you want to avoid IS interference during composition.

6.3 Using with Extenders (Teleconverters)

This lens is compatible with Canon EF 1.4x II/III and 2x II/III extenders to further increase focal length. Note that using an extender will reduce the effective maximum aperture and may affect autofocus performance.

  • Attach the extender between the lens and the camera body.
  • With a 1.4x extender, the focal length becomes 700mm and the maximum aperture becomes f/5.6.
  • With a 2x extender, the focal length becomes 1000mm and the maximum aperture becomes f/8.
  • Autofocus may be limited to the center AF point or may not function at all depending on the camera model and extender combination, especially at f/8.

7. Maintenance and Storage

7.1 Cleaning the Lens

  • Lens Elements: Use a lens blower brush to remove dust. For smudges, use a clean, soft lens cloth and a small amount of lens cleaning fluid. Wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
  • Lens Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth.
  • Do not use organic solvents: Solvents like paint thinner or benzene can damage the lens finish.

7.2 Storage

  • Always attach the front and rear lens caps when not in use.
  • Store the lens in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area to prevent mold and mildew.
  • If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidifying agent or a dry cabinet.
  • Avoid storing near chemicals that can emit volatile gases.
