2. Product Components
The Eva Solo Cafe Solo Coffee Maker consists of the following main components:
- Glass Flask: The main carafe where coffee is brewed and served.
- Drip-Free Filter Funnel: A stainless steel and rubber filter system designed for pouring without drips.
- Neoprene Cover: A zip-up insulating cover that helps maintain coffee temperature.
3. Setup
- Unpack: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the glass flask and filter funnel with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. The neoprene cover can be hand washed.
- Assemble: Place the neoprene cover around the glass flask and zip it up. Insert the filter funnel into the top of the glass flask.
4. Operating Instructions: Brewing Coffee
Follow these steps for brewing coffee with your Eva Solo Cafe Solo:
- Pre-heat (Optional but Recommended): Boil approximately 1 liter of water and pour it into the Cafe Solo. Place the filter and lid on top to allow the entire apparatus to warm up.
- Prepare Water: Boil fresh, filtered water. For optimal flavor, avoid re-boiling previously boiled water. Allow the water to cool for 30-45 seconds after boiling to reach the ideal brewing temperature (approximately 200°F / 93°C).
- Add Coffee Grounds: While the second batch of water is heating, pour the pre-heating water from the Cafe Solo into a thermal carafe (if using) to warm it. Then, add your desired amount of coarse-ground coffee directly into the bottom of the Cafe Solo glass flask. A general guideline is 9-10 tablespoons (approximately 60-70 grams) for 1 liter of water, but adjust to personal preference.
- Pour Water and Stir: Start a timer for 4 minutes. Immediately pour the hot water over the coffee grounds in the Cafe Solo. As you pour, a bloom of foam and grounds will appear. Gently stir the mixture to ensure all grounds are saturated and to reduce the foam. Continue pouring until the water level is approximately 1 inch below the narrowest part of the carafe's neck.
- Steep: Once the water is poured and stirred, place the filter funnel and lid onto the Cafe Solo. Ensure the neoprene jacket is zipped up to help retain heat. Allow the coffee to steep for the full 4 minutes.
- Serve: When the timer rings, remove the lid and filter. Pour the brewed coffee into your cup or a pre-warmed thermal carafe. The conical mesh filter will separate the grounds from the liquid as you pour.
Important Note: To prevent over-extraction and bitterness, it is recommended to transfer the brewed coffee to a separate serving vessel immediately after the 4-minute steeping time. Leaving coffee in contact with grounds for extended periods can negatively impact flavor.
5. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning ensures the best taste and extends the life of your coffee maker.
- Glass Flask: The glass flask is dishwasher safe. For hand washing, use warm soapy water and a bottle brush to thoroughly clean the interior.
- Filter Funnel: Hand wash the stainless steel and rubber filter funnel with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all coffee residues.
- Neoprene Cover: The neoprene cover should be hand washed with mild soap and air-dried. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
- Disposing of Grounds: After brewing, carefully rinse the coffee grounds from the carafe and filter into a sink drain equipped with a filter, or directly into a trash can.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Eva Solo Cafe Solo, consider the following:
- Coffee Tastes Bitter:
- Ensure you are using a coarse grind. Fine grounds can lead to over-extraction.
- Reduce steeping time slightly (e.g., 3.5 minutes).
- Transfer coffee to a separate carafe immediately after brewing to prevent continued extraction.
- Check water temperature; excessively hot water can cause bitterness.
- Coffee Tastes Weak:
- Increase the amount of coffee grounds used.
- Ensure water is hot enough (around 200°F / 93°C).
- Verify steeping time is at least 4 minutes.
- Use fresh, quality coffee beans.
- Grounds in Coffee:
- Ensure the filter funnel is properly seated.
- Use a consistent, coarse grind. Very fine particles can pass through the mesh.
- Pour slowly and steadily.
