3. Setup and Assembly

Before operating your chainsaw, ensure it is properly assembled and prepared according to these instructions.

3.1 Bar and Chain Installation

1. Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged from the power source.
2. Remove the chain cover by loosening the nuts.
3. Place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the direction of rotation (away from the motor).
4. Fit the guide bar onto the studs, ensuring the chain fits into the groove of the guide bar.
5. Replace the chain cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.

3.2 Filling the Chain Oil Reservoir

The RM1645 features an automatic oiler system. It is crucial to keep the oil reservoir filled with appropriate bar and chain oil to ensure proper lubrication and prevent damage to the chain and bar.

1. Place the chainsaw on a flat, stable surface.
2. Unscrew the oil cap located on the side of the chainsaw.
3. Carefully pour quality bar and chain oil into the reservoir until it reaches the "MAX" level indicated by the clear visibility window.
4. Replace the oil cap securely.
5. Regularly check the oil level during operation using the clear window and refill as needed.

3.3 Adjusting Chain Tension

Proper chain tension is vital for safe and efficient operation. A loose chain can derail, and a too-tight chain can cause excessive wear and damage.

1. Ensure the chainsaw is unplugged.
2. Slightly loosen the chain cover nuts.
3. Use the side-mounted tensioning screw to adjust the chain. Turn clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen.
4. The chain is correctly tensioned when it can be pulled away from the guide bar by about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3-6 mm) at the center, but the drive links remain in the bar groove.
5. Once tension is correct, fully tighten the chain cover nuts.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Starting the Chainsaw

1. Ensure the chain brake is engaged (pushed forward).
2. Connect the chainsaw to a suitable outdoor-rated extension cord, then plug the extension cord into a grounded outlet.
3. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, one on the front handle and one on the rear handle.
4. Disengage the chain brake (pull back towards the operator).
5. Press the trigger switch to start the motor. The chain will begin to move.

4.2 Cutting Techniques

• Felling Small Trees: For trees up to 6 inches in diameter, make a shallow notch cut on the side of the tree in the direction of the fall, then make the felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch.
• Limbing: Remove branches from a fallen tree. Work from the base of the tree towards the top, cutting smaller branches first. Be aware of branches under tension.
• Bucking: Cutting a fallen log into shorter sections. Support the log to prevent pinching the chain. If cutting a log supported at both ends, cut from the top down (overbuck) about one-third of the way, then finish from the bottom up (underbuck) to prevent pinching.
• Always maintain a stable stance and keep the chainsaw close to your body for better control.
• Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar to prevent kickback.

4.3 Stopping the Chainsaw

1. Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop.
2. Engage the chain brake for added safety.
3. Always unplug the chainsaw from the power source when not in use, before making adjustments, or performing maintenance.

5.1 Chain Sharpening

A sharp chain is essential for efficient and safe cutting. A dull chain will produce sawdust instead of chips and require more force to cut.

• Refer to the chain manufacturer's instructions for the correct file size and sharpening angles.
• Sharpen each cutter with a round file, maintaining the original angles.
• File all cutters on one side, then flip the chainsaw and file the cutters on the other side.
• Ensure depth gauges are also maintained to the correct height.

5.2 Guide Bar Maintenance

• Periodically clean the guide bar groove to remove sawdust and debris.
• Flip the guide bar regularly to ensure even wear on both sides.
• Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.

5.3 Automatic Oiler System

• Always use quality bar and chain oil. Do not use waste oil or other lubricants.
• Monitor the oil level frequently using the clear window. Refill before the reservoir becomes empty.
• If the oiler system appears to be malfunctioning (e.g., no oil on the chain, excessive leakage), inspect the oil passages for blockages and ensure the oil cap is sealed correctly. Consult a service professional if issues persist.

5.4 Cleaning and Storage

• After each use, unplug the chainsaw and allow it to cool.
• Clean the exterior of the chainsaw with a damp cloth. Remove sawdust and debris from the chain, guide bar, and motor housing vents.
• Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children.
• If storing for an extended period, ensure the oil reservoir is filled to prevent drying out of the oil pump components.
