Introduction

The Magellan MAP 330x is a 12-channel Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver designed for portable navigation. It features a built-in 8 MB base map with worldwide political boundaries, U.S. cities, highways, major roads, national parks, airports, waterways, and railways. This device is engineered to provide reliable location and navigation information for various outdoor and travel activities.

Key features include a high-resolution gray-scale display, 500 waypoints, 20 reversible routes with 30 legs, a calculator for determining optimal fishing and hunting times, proximity alarms, and a sun/moon calculator. The SmartTrack feature records up to 1,200 points, and BackTrack allows for easy return to a starting point. Superior tracking is ensured by a quadrifilar antenna.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The MAP 330x operates on two (2) AA alkaline batteries. To install:

1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
2. Slide the cover off in the direction indicated by the arrow.
3. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as marked inside the compartment.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

A fresh set of AA alkaline batteries provides up to 10 hours of operation.

2. MapSend Streets Software Installation

The included MapSend Streets CD-ROM allows you to transfer detailed street maps to your MAP 330x. This software is compatible with desktop PCs.

1. Insert the MapSend Streets CD-ROM into your computer's CD drive.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
3. Once installed, launch the MapSend application.
4. Use the PC cable to connect your MAP 330x unit to your computer's serial port or a compatible USB-to-serial adapter.
5. Within MapSend, select the areas you wish to transfer to your GPS unit. The MAP 330x has 8 MB of rewritable flash memory for map data.
6. Initiate the data transfer process from the MapSend software.

MapSend Streets also facilitates full waypoint and route management, as well as a measure-distance function on your PC.

Operating the MAP 330x

Powering On/Off

• To power on, press and hold the POWER button until the screen illuminates.
• To power off, press and hold the POWER button until the unit shuts down.

Acquiring a Satellite Signal

For accurate positioning, the MAP 330x must acquire signals from multiple GPS satellites. Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky. Initial acquisition may take a few minutes.

Navigation Screens

The unit features four graphic screens on its 104 x 160 gray-scale display. Use the directional pad and menu buttons to navigate between screens and options.

• Map Screen: Displays your current position on the loaded maps.
• Compass Screen: Provides directional guidance.
• Data Screen: Shows various navigation data such as speed, bearing, and distance.
• Satellite Status Screen: Shows the satellites currently being tracked.

Waypoints and Routes

• Waypoints: The MAP 330x can store up to 500 waypoints. A waypoint is a saved location. To save a waypoint, navigate to your current location on the map screen and follow the on-screen prompts to mark it.
• Routes: Create and manage up to 20 reversible routes, each with up to 30 legs. Routes are sequences of waypoints that guide you along a specific path.

SmartTrack and BackTrack

• SmartTrack: Automatically records your path, storing up to 1,200 points. This creates a breadcrumb trail of where you have been.
• BackTrack: Allows you to retrace your steps along a recorded SmartTrack path, guiding you back to your starting point or any point along the recorded track.

Special Features

• Fishing/Hunting Calculator: Determines optimal times based on lunar and solar cycles.
• Sun/Moon Calculator: Provides sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, and moon phase information for any location and date.
• Proximity Alarms: Set alarms to alert you when you approach a specific waypoint or location.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the unit's exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears to ensure continuous operation.
• Software Updates: Periodically check the Magellan website for any available firmware updates for your MAP 330x to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest features.
