4.3 Channel Management

  1. Add New Channel:
    • In the Meshtastic app, create a new channel.
    • Configure key parameters for the channel, such as Modem Preset, Region (frequency plan), Hop limit, TX power, and Frequency slot.
    • Once created, share the channel's QR code with your friends to invite them to join.
    • Important: After successfully adding a friend, do not change the channel parameters, otherwise you will not be able to receive messages from your friends.
  2. Join a Channel:
    • Use the Meshtastic app's 'Scan' feature to scan the QR code information shared by your friends.
    • Once your friend confirms, you will successfully join their channel.

4.4 Start Chatting

Switch to the chat option in the Meshtastic app to see the channels you have joined. You can then send your first message.

  • Check the signal strength and battery status of all nodes connected to your channel.
  • Communication is only possible within range and with a sufficient signal.

4.5 Decentralized Communication Network

In LoRa communication, a single node can automatically form a network and establish a grid-based network. The more solar-powered nodes there are, the stronger the network becomes, with smoother communication and a wider communication range.

Figure 12: Decentralized LoRa network formation.

By adding more solar-powered LoRa nodes, the network expands accordingly, allowing for greater distances and more robust communication.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Solar Panel

To ensure efficient power generation, please clean any dust off the solar panels once a month.

5.2 Battery Replacement

It is recommended to replace the internal 18650 batteries every 12 months to maintain optimal performance.

5.3 Over-The-Air (OTA) Firmware Update

To update the device firmware:

  1. Connect the LoRa Node to a PC using a Type-C cable that supports data communication (charging-only cables will not work).
  2. Install the CP2102 serial port driver on your PC. You can download it from: https://www.silabs.com/software-and-tools/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads
  3. Once connected, the ESP32 device should be visible in your PC's device manager.
  4. Visit https://flasher.meshtastic.org/ to download and update the latest firmware.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Device not powering on: Ensure 18650 batteries are correctly installed with proper polarity and are sufficiently charged. The device will not work without batteries.
  • No communication: Check the signal strength and battery status of all nodes in your channel. Communication requires both nodes to be within range and have a signal.
  • Cannot receive messages after adding friends: If you change channel parameters (Modem Preset, Region, Hop limit, TX power, Frequency slot) after friends have joined, they may lose connection. Avoid changing these parameters once a channel is established.
  • Charging port appearance: Please note that the position of the product's charging port may vary between versions. This is a design adjustment and does not affect functionality.
