4. Operating Instructions

The Vention 5-Port 1000Mbps Ethernet Switch is an unmanaged device, meaning it operates automatically without requiring any user configuration.

  • Plug and Play: Simply connect your network devices, and the switch will automatically detect and establish connections.
  • Auto-Negotiation: Each port automatically detects the speed (10/100/1000Mbps) and duplex mode (Full-Duplex or Half-Duplex) of the connected device and adjusts accordingly for optimal performance.
  • MDI/MDIX Auto Sensing: Eliminates the need for crossover cables; any standard Ethernet cable can be used for direct connection to a PC or an uplink connection to another switch/router.
  • LED Indicators: Each port has an associated LED.
    • Solid Green/Blue: Indicates a stable link connection.
    • Blinking Green/Blue: Indicates data activity on that port.
    • No Light: No link or device connected.
  • Non-Blocking Wire-Speed Forwarding: Ensures efficient data flow, preventing congestion even when multiple devices are transmitting simultaneously.
  • MAC Address Self-Learning & Aging: The switch automatically learns and updates the MAC addresses of connected devices, optimizing network traffic.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Vention Ethernet Switch, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Placement: Place the switch in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, and areas with high humidity.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the switch. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation holes on the aircraft-grade aluminum shell are not blocked to allow for efficient heat dissipation.
  • Cable Management: Organize Ethernet cables neatly to prevent tangles and reduce strain on the ports. The compact design supports wall-mounting for better cable management.
  • Power Supply: Use only the original power adapter provided with the switch.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Vention Ethernet Switch, try the following steps:

  • No Power:
    • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the switch and a working power outlet.
    • Check if the power outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
  • No Link Light for a Connected Device:
    • Verify that the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into both the switch port and the device's network port.
    • Try a different Ethernet cable to rule out a faulty cable.
    • Ensure the connected device's network adapter is enabled and functioning correctly.
    • Try connecting the device to a different port on the switch.
  • Slow Network Speed:
    • Ensure all connected devices and cables support Gigabit Ethernet (Cat5e or Cat6 cables are recommended for 1000Mbps).
    • Check your internet service provider's speed and your router's performance.
    • Minimize network congestion by reducing the number of active downloads or streaming services.
  • Intermittent Connection:
    • Check for loose cable connections.
    • Ensure the switch is placed away from strong electromagnetic interference sources.
    • Restart the switch by unplugging and re-plugging the power adapter.
  • Surveillance Cameras (Non-PoE):
    • Remember that this switch does not support Power over Ethernet (PoE). Ensure all surveillance cameras are powered by an external DC power supply.
