1. Introduction

The MASTFUYI FY18K is a smart AC voltage tester pen designed for electricians and DIY enthusiasts. It offers multiple functions including non-contact AC voltage detection (NCV), live wire identification, breakpoint finding, direct AC voltage measurement, and ambient temperature measurement. Featuring a clear LCD digital display, LED lighting, and a rechargeable battery, it is a versatile and essential tool for electrical work.

3. Product Components

Familiarize yourself with the different parts and controls of your FY18K voltage tester:

  • NCV Sensor Head (Detachable Probe): Used for non-contact voltage detection and direct AC voltage measurement. It is interchangeable and a spare is included.
  • Flashlight: Provides illumination in dark working environments.
  • Display Screen: LCD digital display shows voltage readings, NCV intensity, temperature, and other indicators.
  • Flashlight/Temperature Mode Button: Press to toggle the flashlight. Long press to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit for temperature display.
  • NCV/Live Button: Press to activate NCV mode. Long press to activate Live Wire Identification mode.
  • Power Button: Press to turn the device on or off.
  • AC Voltage Test Button: Hold this button to perform direct AC voltage measurements.

4. Setup

4.1 Charging the Battery

The FY18K comes with a built-in 500mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery. Before first use, or when the low battery indicator appears, charge the device using the provided Type-C charging cable.

  1. Locate the Type-C charging port on the side of the device.
  2. Connect the Type-C cable to the device and the USB-A end to a standard USB power adapter (not included) or a computer USB port.
  3. The charging indicator on the device will show charging status.

4.2 Replacing the Probe Tip

The FY18K features a detachable probe for easy replacement.

  1. Gently unscrew the probe tip protector and probe handle sleeve.
  2. Carefully unscrew the existing probe from the device.
  3. Screw in the new probe (either the original or the spare) until secure.
  4. Reattach the probe handle sleeve and tip protector.

5. Operating Instructions

The FY18K offers various testing modes for different electrical applications.

5.1 Power On/Off

  • Press the Power Button (green button with power symbol) to turn the device on.
  • Press the Power Button again to turn the device off.
  • The device features an automatic shutdown function to conserve battery if inactive for a period.

5.2 AC Voltage Measurement (Direct Contact)

This mode measures the actual AC voltage in a circuit.

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Insert the probe tip into the live terminal of an AC outlet or touch it to a live wire.
  3. Hold the AC Voltage Test Button (black button with 'V' symbol) to initiate measurement.
  4. The voltage reading (1-300V AC) will be displayed on the screen.

5.3 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Detection

This mode allows for safe detection of AC voltage without direct contact.

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Press the NCV/Live Button (green button with 'NCV' and 'LIVE' labels) to enter NCV mode. The NCV indicator will appear on the screen.
  3. Bring the NCV sensor head close to the wire or electrical component you wish to test.
  4. The device will alert you when near live AC power:
    • Weak/Medium Signal: Beeping sound and pulsing light.
    • Strong Signal: Flashing bar on the display and a loud alarm.

5.4 Live Wire Identification

This function helps distinguish between live and neutral wires.

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Long press the NCV/Live Button to enter LIVE mode. The 'LIVE' indicator will appear on the screen.
  3. Insert the probe tip into the live terminal of an AC outlet or touch it to a wire.
  4. Observe the alarm:
    • Live Wire: Strong alarm and visual indication.
    • Neutral Wire: Weak or no alarm.

5.5 Breakpoint Detection

Use NCV mode to locate breaks in a live wire.

  1. Turn on the device and activate NCV mode (press the NCV/Live Button).
  2. Move the NCV sensor head along the insulated live wire.
  3. The device will indicate voltage presence up to the point of the break. The alarm and display indication will stop or significantly weaken past the breakpoint.

5.6 Ambient Temperature Measurement

The FY18K can measure the ambient temperature.

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. The ambient temperature will be displayed on the screen by default or can be accessed via a button press.
  3. Press the Flashlight/Temperature Mode Button to switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) display units.

5.7 Flashlight Function

The integrated LED flashlight assists in working in low-light conditions.

  • Press the Flashlight/Temperature Mode Button (green button with flashlight symbol) to turn the flashlight on or off.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Charge the device regularly, even if not in use, to maintain battery health.
  • Probe Care: Ensure the detachable probe is clean and free from debris for accurate readings. Replace if damaged or worn.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your FY18K, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Device does not power on:
    • Ensure the battery is charged. Connect the device to a Type-C charger and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on again.
  • Inaccurate AC voltage readings:
    • Ensure the probe tip is making good contact with the conductor.
    • Verify that you are holding the AC Voltage Test Button during direct measurement.
    • Test on a known live circuit to confirm device functionality.
  • NCV detection is inconsistent or not working:
    • Ensure NCV mode is active (NCV indicator on screen).
    • The NCV function detects electromagnetic fields; very thick insulation or shielded cables may reduce sensitivity.
    • Ensure the NCV sensor head is clean.
  • Live Wire Identification is incorrect:
    • Ensure LIVE mode is active (LIVE indicator on screen).
    • The distinction between live and neutral wires relies on the strength of the electrical field. In some complex wiring scenarios, results may vary.
  • Breakpoint detection is not working:
    • Ensure NCV mode is active.
    • Move the tester slowly along the wire. The detection relies on the change in the electromagnetic field.
