5. Operating Instructions

5.1. General Operation

  1. Ensure the smoke machine is properly set up as described in Section 4.
  2. Hang the SD201 unit using the hook (B) in a stable position, preferably under the vehicle's hood.
  3. Press the 'Start' key (H) to begin smoke generation. The unit will start producing smoke.
  4. Allow a few moments for the smoke to build up.
  5. Direct the smoke output into the system you wish to test using the appropriate adaptor.
  6. Observe for smoke escaping from any cracks or openings, indicating a leak.
  7. Once testing is complete, press the 'Stop' key (I) to cease smoke generation.
  8. Disconnect the power cord from the car battery and the smoke machine.

5.2. Leak Detection Process

The SD201 can be used to detect leaks in various automotive systems. Here are common applications:

Diagram of car systems testable by smoke machine

Image: A detailed diagram of a car's engine and undercarriage, highlighting various systems testable for leaks: Evap System, Intake System, Engine System, Car Sealing Test, Turbo System, Crankcase System, EGR System, Fuel Tank System, Exhaust System.

  • Crankcase System Test: Connect the smoke hose to an appropriate crankcase opening. Look for smoke indicating excessive pressure or corrosion.
  • Intake System Test: Seal the air intake and connect the smoke hose. Smoke escaping indicates insufficient air intake.
  • Car Sealing Test: Introduce smoke into the vehicle cabin or specific sealed areas. Observe for smoke escaping from door seals, window seals, or body seams.
  • Fuel Tank System Test: Connect to the fuel tank's vent or filler neck. Leaks can be caused by improper installation or a faulty fuel cap.
  • Turbo Test: Check for coolant leaks around the turbocharger by introducing smoke into relevant hoses.
  • Various Pipe Fittings Test: Use adaptors to test brake hoses, power steering hoses, cooling system hoses, air conditioning system hoses, turbocharger hoses, fuel hoses, intake and exhaust system hoses.
  • EVAP System Test: Connect to the EVAP system. Leaks can cause fuel vapor to escape, leading to pollution or unstable engine idling.
  • Exhaust System Test: Introduce smoke into the exhaust system. Smoke escaping indicates leaks that can lead to unpurified gases entering the atmosphere or increased vehicle noise.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

  • After each use, wipe down the exterior of the unit with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Ensure no smoke oil residue is left on the unit or accessories.

6.2. Smoke Oil Management

  • Regularly check the smoke oil level through the liquid level window (C).
  • Refill smoke oil when the level is low, following the instructions in Section 4.1.
  • If the device is not used for an extended period, it is recommended to drain any remaining smoke oil and store the unit dry.

6.3. Storage

  • Store the SD201 unit and its accessories in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Keep the unit in its original packaging or a protective case to prevent damage.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No smoke output: Check if the unit is powered on (power indicator lit). Ensure the smoke oil level is sufficient. Verify all hose connections are secure.
  • Unit shuts off unexpectedly: The overheat protection may have activated. Allow the unit to cool down for at least 10 minutes before attempting to restart. Ensure adequate ventilation during operation.
  • Weak smoke output: Check the smoke oil level. Ensure the power supply from the 12V battery is stable. Verify there are no blockages in the smoke hose or adaptors.
  • Power indicator not lighting up: Check the connection to the 12V car battery. Ensure the alligator clips are securely attached to the correct terminals. Verify the car battery has sufficient charge.
