4. Setup

4.1 Wiring Instructions

To enable VTX control via your flight controller (FC) using SmartAudio, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the RX white line of the VTX to either the TX signal line or a SOFTSERIAL1 signal line of a spare UART port on your FC.

4.2 Betaflight Configuration

After wiring, configure Betaflight to recognize and control the VTX:

  1. Connect your flight controller to Betaflight Configurator.
  2. Navigate to the 'Ports' tab.
  3. For the UART port to which the VTX's RX white line is connected (e.g., TX signal line or SOFTSERIAL1), enable the 'TBS (SmartAudio)' function under the 'Peripherals' column.
  4. Click 'Save and Reboot' to apply the changes.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power Light Indicator

The VTX features a power light indicator that signals the current output power setting:

5.2 Adjusting VTX Parameters via Betaflight OSD

Once SmartAudio is configured, you can adjust VTX settings directly from your FPV goggles or monitor using the Betaflight OSD:

  1. Arm your drone (if safe to do so) or enter the OSD menu via your transmitter sticks (usually throttle down, yaw left, pitch up).
  2. Navigate through the OSD menu to find the VTX settings. This is typically under 'FEATURES' or 'VTX'.
  3. Within the VTX parameter adjustment interface, you can select your desired frequency band, channel, and output power (25mW, 200mW, 400mW, or 600mW).
  4. After making your selections, ensure you 'SAVE' the settings to apply them and exit the OSD.

6. Maintenance

The DarwinFPV Tiny Ape VTX is designed for durability. Regular maintenance is minimal but recommended:

  • Keep the VTX clean and free from dust and debris.
  • Ensure all connections are secure before each flight.
  • Avoid exposing the VTX to extreme temperatures or moisture.
  • Inspect for any physical damage to the board or antenna connector.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VTX, consider the following:

  • No Video Signal: Check all wiring connections, especially the video signal line and ground. Ensure the VTX is powered correctly (5V). Verify that your FPV receiver is on the correct frequency and band.
  • Poor Video Quality/Range: Check your antenna for damage and ensure it is securely connected. Try increasing the VTX output power in Betaflight OSD. Ensure there are no obstructions between your drone and receiver.
  • VTX Not Responding to SmartAudio: Double-check the RX white line connection to the FC's TX/SOFTSERIAL port. Verify that SmartAudio (TBS) is enabled for the correct UART in Betaflight's Ports tab. Ensure your FC firmware supports SmartAudio.
  • Overheating: Ensure adequate airflow around the VTX, especially when operating at higher power levels. Avoid prolonged bench testing without an antenna connected, as this can damage the VTX.

8. User Tips

No specific user tips are available from reviews or Q&A at this time. However, general tips for FPV VTX usage include:

  • Always connect an antenna to your VTX before powering it on to prevent damage.
  • Be mindful of local regulations regarding VTX power output and frequency usage.
  • Consider using a VTX table in Betaflight for more precise control over channels and power levels.
