3. Setup and Assembly
3.1. Battery Installation (Not included with Bare Tool)
The DTW285Z is a "Bare Tool" model, meaning the battery and charger are sold separately. Ensure you use a compatible Makita 18V Lithium-Ion battery pack.
- Align the battery pack with the battery housing on the tool.
- Slide the battery pack into the housing until it clicks securely into place.
- To remove, press the release button on the battery pack and slide it out.
3.2. Socket Attachment
The impact wrench features a 1/2" (12.7mm) square drive for attaching sockets.
- Ensure the tool is off and the battery is removed.
- Push the desired 1/2" square drive impact socket firmly onto the anvil until it locks into place.
- To remove, pull the socket off the anvil.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1. Powering On/Off
The tool is powered on by pressing the trigger switch and powered off by releasing it.
4.2. Forward/Reverse Rotation
The direction of rotation is changed by the forward/reverse switch located above the trigger. Push the switch to the left for forward rotation (tightening) and to the right for reverse rotation (loosening). Ensure the switch is in the center position when not in use to prevent accidental startup.
4.3. Variable Speed Trigger
The tool features a variable speed trigger. The speed and impact force increase with increased pressure on the trigger switch.
4.4. Impact Mechanism
The impact mechanism engages when resistance is met, providing high torque for fastening and loosening. This mechanism reduces kickback to the user.
4.5. LED Work Light
The built-in LED work light illuminates the work area when the trigger is pulled. It remains on for a short period after the trigger is released.
