    Question

Can the TP-Link Deco M3W be used without a main Deco unit, and how can I troubleshoot my M4R unit?

    Answer

No, the TP-Link Deco M3W cannot be used as a standalone router. It is designed specifically as an add-on unit for an existing TP-Link Deco Mesh Wi-Fi system. It requires a main Deco unit (such as a Deco M4, M5, or M9 Plus) to establish the network; it cannot connect directly to a non-Deco router via Wi-Fi to create a mesh.

Regarding your Deco M4R issues, if it is not responding even with a new router, you should perform a factory reset:

    • With the unit powered on, use a paperclip to press and hold the Reset button (usually located on the bottom) for about 1 second.
    • The LED should pulse yellow, indicating the reset was successful.
    • Wait for the LED to pulse blue, which means it is ready for setup again via the Deco app.

If you are trying to use the M4R as your main router, ensure it is connected via Ethernet cable to your modem and that you are following the setup steps in the Deco app. If the M4R is still not working, it may be a hardware fault or a configuration mismatch with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) settings.
